We leave the 2023 season and move on to the 2024 draft.
Wonder says that what has happened to the Giants has a very nice silver lining. With Jones out the rest of the season (ACL?) and Taylor on IR, the Giants may not win another game. This means the Giants will pick either 1.02 or 1.03 (AZ, CAR). And this draft is loaded with QB. Williams, Maye, Nix and Daniels. He isn’t sure which one is tops, but all 4 are excellent prospects.
“I need to see the Combine to look at the measurables,” says Wonder. “Daniels is so freaking athletic, so I need to see what kind of arm strength he has. It’s not clear to me that Williams is the #1 prospect. He may be. He may not. I like the sophomore from Alabama, Milroe, but I don’t know if he’s coming out. Either way, this draft is loaded at QB so it’s going to break well for the Giants picking so high.”

So, we are no longer believers in first building the OL? I guess that philosophy had a short life!

QB. Protect QB. We were duped by Jones at the end of last season, and we need a QB. If you are picking high and you have a shot at a franchise QB, you must get that. Plus, they still have Thomas and JMS. Keep building OL along w QB. And for heaven’s sake, get an OL coach.

If Jones is released or we go in another direction in next years draft, what is the salary cap implication. One thought is rookie contracts are not debilitating and it may offset the Jones hole we may be in.

The contract was designed to have flexibility to cut/trade him after 2 years. So they’ll keep him on for 2024 (which is not unreasonable w a rookie) and have a cap hit of 22M in 2025.

For a 4 yr contract that doesn’t seem flexible at all but I don’t know all the details. Just thinking out loud, but I can’t see drafting a QB and keeping Jones on for a year, then eating another $22M. That would be a year of sending wrong signals. Also, that defeats the purpose of the mantra fix the OL. There really is no right answer.

The order is QB, protect QB, rush the QB. It’s a QB league, and with 2 R2’s they’ll have to keep drafting to fix the OL behind the next QB taken.
